OK, you wanted a new post, and hi, I am new to this community. I am not a new bookseller, though. I rode two Borders stores down, one on the first cut, got transferred, and the second on the close.

It worked out well for me. I saw Borders failing early enough on to get my MFA, so I had teaching positions. I will tell you something. Finshing me BA, my first MA, my MFA, and even teaching, I always said, "I'll quit the bookseller before Xmas." I never have. Even when I didn't need the money.

Well now my wife has encouraged me to move cross country, and she is starting a Law Practice, so I had to give up a position. So where do I go? The bookstore.

I'm worried about digital. In my store there aren't hours for someone to plug it, we are ceding it to Amazon. We are ceding a lot to Amazon. And I am seeing some things Borders did. Starting to cut the midlist, buying more copies of bestsellers than we need as they know we can flip them later as bargain books. These are tricks, they aren't good bookselling.

But Amazon is the enemy. I will say, back in the day, Borders was really awesome, and you guys sucked. We were the reader's bookstore, we had great backlist on the shelves, and an 80/20 ratio of fulltime to part on the goodside.

I'm happy to work for B&N, I just say, keep an out. Amazon has never made a profit. How many times to you hear, oh, we will just buy it from Amazon?

My store, Borders, that I adored, when we were closing, the first thing the reclimation company made us do, was close the restrooms, because they didn't want to pay for custodial. We put a sign up, "NO RESTROOMS TRY AMAZON"

Best, Friends

There is a great deal of truth in what you say, and I feel like my own store is swirling down the drain.

As far as digital, We aren't ceding ground to Amazon, we lost that battle two years ago. They shot their wad with Nook HD/HD+ during Holiday 2012 — huge sales goals, and tons of payroll being spent on Nook during the holidays, but it was yet another half-baked device: excellent hardware, iffy software, and crap features... it took them half a year to roll out the update with Google Play, at which point the device finally became something worth writing home about, but by that time we'd thoroughly screwed the pooch, sales-wise. It seems like every time B&N takes a step forward, it's immediately followed by two steps back.

Don't let someone like Smithback know you have a few complaints about B&N or you will be seen as entitled and don't value your job. The problem with having too many employees that drink the kool aid or constantly wear rose colored glasses is their denial keeps them from making important changes in a company.

your education vs your grammer
If you have all the education you say you have, why is your sentence structure so bad? I wonder about the quality of the schools you attended. Are you an example of what is now considered "normal"?

No, you are the perfect example of an inglorious shit-for-brains fucking asshole. Go fuck your mother!

grammer? Really?
It's grammar moron. You can't even insult correctly. Your lack of vocabulary is the reason you use vulgar language so often.

The reason why BN can no longer compete against Amazon and other sites is because the corporate people and Store Managers have taken away the one thing that made us unique--our knowledgeable staff who read books and can give live in person recommendations. This was done by the insidious and underhanded practice by store managers of eliminating the long term employees who had the knowledge and experience in the bookselling world. The aforementioned long term employees make more than the new hires, so they want to get them out by any means necessary.

My God! How many times do we have to say the same damn things over-and-over-and-over. This "journal" is so rediculous. Have a new thought already...

Fire all dm's!
Attention Barnes & Noble Shareholders:

Let's fire all top management and District managers and start over with a clean slate.

Get rid of the most expensive & useless employees first so we can save this company.  No golden parachutes for overpaid employees.

Must Read For All employees.
Don't take this place too seriously.   Why worry about a company that will most likely go under?

If you want to keep your job tips:
Never call we listen it's a trap set up by corporate, always be looking for a better job but tell no one, don't gossip or complain on the job, be productive & stop worrying about what you can't control, don't trust anyone that works here, stay in school & get that degree, avoid conversations with DM's they can't be trusted, if hours are cut file for unemployment, save & invest some money, never show anger or stress on the job & always try to look happy, keep to yourself & avoid workplace drama, do whatever management wants & don't rock the boat, give no ideas or suggestions on how to improve anything, know that you max out on raises and will eventually stop getting raises, the longer you work here the more management wants you gone, if hours are reduced look at temp companies to make some money, file for food stamps if hours are reduced, ignore & avoid bad employees that create drama, laugh & have fun this company won't be around forever.
