Hey, minions.  I just signed on to BNLJ tonight to read some of the many hateful comments you've all left within my last post.

But I'm admittedly shocked: has no one posted a new discussion in the forum?

No complaints about the new Samsung Nook?
No complaints about
The Day the Crayons Quit, or the earlier Get Pop Cultured?

Jesus, people...where are my antoginists?  You've all been so VOCAL about my opionions regarding BN's direction...but you've had nothing to say for the past month?  Seriously?  Not a snark, a snip, or a general bitch about where Barnes and Noble is going?  Have you all moved to the BN Facebook page where you have to make yourselves known before you spew an anti-BN diatribe?  I'm genuinely disappointed.  I thought I could always count on my anti-BN, entitlement-demanding coworkers.  At the very least, some of you have been great to jump-start a discussion.

But that being said, I don't mean to sound snotty...but are you BNLJ folks finally getting behind your employer?  If yes, I'm delighted!  We ALL have an opportunity to support BN and keep the brick & mortar stores in business!  BN rocks (though I hope we increase our pay scale), and it's because of each and every one of you that our company pushes forward, and makes those changes that keep us viable in the future.

I'm genuinely proud of BNLJ tonight :)

I'm genuinely proud of each and every one of you!

That's right. If Smithback ends up dead, the black crayon from krrobar.com will leave his mark on you.

Not true. You have to have a warrant to get ISP addresses. Barnes & Noble won't do it unless people talk about illegal stuff. The courts have said employees can blog and it's protected by the first amendment which is the same amendment that give Bn the right to sell Jock Sturgis photography books. Fuck online censorship!

You are, in fact, the biggest troll here.

Keep prompting the hate, smithback, it's what you do best.

Hey, minions...thanks for the all the shout-outs.

And I do owe you an apology, because as mentioned in some previous post, I''d given access to "Smithback" to a few trusted coworkers. Chuckling...some of their replies have been a little on the snotty side. But I'm back, ME, Smithback, the voice of reason you all love to hate. And I've stopped passing my LJ account around the breakroom table. I regret some of my coworkers' snippy posts, but I do stand behind their "intent"...and how devoted booksellers disagree with with BN haters. That being said...

HEY GUYS, things are great! Our company is healthy, the Samsung Nook is doing well, and BN is bouncing back. We've starting POD machines (as I predicted), and I'm confidant that my next predictions are just around the corner...wine bars, comfy chairs/sofas, and smaller, better-organized stores. BN is in the right path...the SMITHBACK path!

Anyway, I guess I'm opening a discussion...for the few remaining posters in the BNLJ forum. What's on your mind, people? What are your concerns with where BN is going? How do YOU feel? How do you feel that you can help make BN a stronger company?

Suggestions:

Fire all DM's and start over.

Listen to all employees..

Value long term employees.

Focus on book culture not tablets.

Focus on improving customer service and putting the book back into the customers hand.

Anyway...I saw that someone wanted to start a Reddit post. That's all well & good, but what's wrong with this LJ forum? You minions already have established a bitch-forum...what makes you think that moving it to Reddit will have better following? I'm just asking. It seems to me that most of LJ's/Reddit's participants have already jumped ship...and into the realistic forum of the zbN FaceBook page? I mean, you've got soooooo many other booksellers reading your posts/concerns. And everyone is "known," so bitchy/entitled comments - without any intelligent thought - are not tolerated.

Again, why not join BN FB? We already have the infrastructure, and 5000+ readers to comment on your opinions.

Membership verses Educator card
After a blockbuster weekend of selling membership cards, can anyone explain why, since membership cards are so important, we don't make the 20% discount a permanent feature.
I have always felt bn would be better off selling a membership that gives 20% to members and give educators a "free" card for a 10% discount.

Interested in starting a Reddit group.
Anyone interested in starting a employee blog on Reddit? Do you have any other places you might want a blog?

I'm not knocking the B&N employee Facebook group but they mainly complain about customers and silly stuff. We need a group that focuses on employee issues.

Nook Books - No More Download Option!
So, for those of you like me who either a) like to back things up or b) own an e-reader not made by BN, you should know BN in all its infinite wisdom has decided to remove the ability to download content to your computer for later use.

Fortunately, I came across a workaround:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246519&page=2

Use it while you can.

I guess I'll be buying Kindle books from now on and converting them with Calibre. Grr.
